The regular monthly meeting of the Mount Vernon Community School District School was held on January 8, 2024.  The following topics were addressed during the meetings:

Approval Agenda:  The meeting agenda was approved as written with no changes proposed.

Superintendent Report:  

Public Comments:  No public comments were made during the meeting.   

Program Division

School Spotlight – Washington Elementary:  Principal Kate Stanton discussed the new “Magic Bus” learning space that is being used for enrichment instruction and activities.  This learning space was the result of a grant secured by the District’s Talented and Gifted teachers.

Talented and Gifted/Enrichment Program Update:  Gifted/Enrichment teachers Kari Martin and Susannah Maddock provided the Board with an overview of programs and activities in the Talented and Gifted and Enrichment programs and classes.

Curriculum Programming Update:  TLC Instructional Specialist Michelle Boyden provided the Board with an update on curriculum work within the structure of the District’s five-year curriculum cycle.  Mrs. Boyden spoke in greater detail about future updates to the literacy curriculum at the elementary level, and work by the math team with learning progressions. 

Personnel Division   

Superintendent Search Update:  President Rick Elliott provided an update to the superintendent search.  There are over twenty applicants for the position, and the Board will review the application materials during a meeting on January 17, 2024.  

Approval of Contracts:  The Board approved the hiring of an Assistant Director of Technology effective immediately, a high school math teacher for 2024-2025, and approved stipends for two coaching positions to address the high number of participants in middle school girls wrestling and boys basketball.

Facilities Division

Twenty Year Facilities Vision Update:  Dr. Batenhorst provided an overview on progress made toward the facilities vision, and provided the Board with a list of facility projects to consider for the future.      

Administrative Division:    

Policy Update:  The Board approved the Second Reading of a series of policies originally discussed in the December 2023 Board meeting.

Reports:  No reports were offered by Board members during the meeting.   

Unfinished Business:  The Board worked on committee assignments with the new Board in place.         

Consent Agenda:  All items in the Consent Agenda were approved as presented. 

School Board Calendar:  The Board adjusted the March meeting date to March 6th at 6:30 p.m.  The Board will also hold a special closed session meeting on January 17, 2024, to review the candidates for the superintendent position.

The next regularly scheduled meeting of the School Board is scheduled for Monday, February 12, 2024.
