A special meeting of the Mount Vernon Community School District School Board was held on April 17, 2024; so that the Board could conduct the second required public hearing related to the property tax rate for next year, and discuss options for addressing its current financial outlook.  The following topics were addressed during the meetings:

Approval Agenda:  The Board approved the agenda with one addendum related to the resignation of a staff member.

Public Hearing Related to the Tax Rate:  No public comments were made during the public hearing.  

Public Comments:  No public comments were offered during the meeting.        

Superintendent Report:  Dr. Batenhorst thanked the Board for its work in addressing the District’s current financial reality, and thanked the staff and community for their patience and understanding as the District works to ensure a solid financial future for the District.

Program Division

Discussion of Options of Savings Related to the District’s Current Financial Reality:  The Board approved an additional $210,000 in non-staff related savings for the 2024-2025 school year.  The total savings approved for next year is $850,000.  

Discussion of Additional Financial Matters Related to Staff Compensation:  The Board approved a plan to utilize savings from its benefits program to provide financial support to all staff members who no longer receive the option of a cash benefit.    

Personnel Division:  The Board approved the hiring of a new seventh grade social studies teacher, and a new head football coach for 2024-2025.  The Board also approved the resignation of Michael Marshall, School Business Official, who is relocating out of the area.

Administrative Division:  School Business Official Michael Marshall provided an overview of the District’s budget for the 2024-2025 school year, with the Board approving the budget for next year.

School Board Calendar:  The next regular meeting of the Mount Vernon Community School District School Board will take place on Monday, May 13, 2024.  The meeting will be held in the Mount Vernon High School Library beginning at 6:30 p.m.
