The regular monthly meeting of the Mount Vernon Community School District School Board was held on July 11, 2022. The following topics were addressed during the meetings:
Approval: The meeting agenda was approved as written with no changes proposed.
Public Hearing – Sale of Equipment: A public hearing time was offered to the community related to the proposed sale of District equipment (600+ computers). No members of the community offered any comments during the hearing.
Superintendent Report: Dr. Batenhorst updated the Board on work being completed this summer to prepare for the beginning of the 2022-2023 school year.
Public Comments: No public comments were offered during the meeting.
Facilities Division: Loren Hoffman of Hall and Hall Engineering provided the Board with an update on the planning process for the proposed Mustang Activities Complex. Patrons had the opportunity to meet with the engineer team and district administrators prior to the regular Board meeting on July 11th.
Program Division
Handbook Approval: The Board approved the following handbooks for the 2022-2023 school Year: Student handbooks for Washington Elementary, Mount Vernon Middle School, and Mount Vernon High School; MVCS Staff Handbook; Certified Staff Employee Handbook; Non-Certified Staff Employee Handbook. Mount Vernon High School student, Jozie Broomhall, spoke to the Board about work that was completed by a student and staff committee regarding changes to the dress code for the high school handbook.
Personnel Division: The Board approved the hiring of a series of certified, support, and coaching staff members and coaches for the 2022-2023 school year.
Administrative Division: The Board approved student nutrition prices for the 2022-2023 school year, along with fees, fines, and charges for services in the District. The Board also approved the First Reading of a series of policy updates provided by the Iowa Association of School Boards.
Reports: No reports were offered in the meeting.
Unfinished Business: The Board discussed scheduling a work session for August to discuss school improvement and goals for the 2022-2023 school year. The Board was also told to prepare for a work session in the next month regarding a review of the cost estimates for the proposed Mustang Activities Complex. This project is set to go out to bid in August.
Consent Agenda: All items in the Consent Agenda were approved as presented.
Next Meeting: The next regular meeting of the School Board will take place on Monday, August 8, 2022. The meeting will start at 6:30 p.m.
