November 4, 2025 School Board Election Information
In Iowa, school board members are elected to serve four-year terms. School board elections are held on the Tuesday after the first Monday of November in odd-numbered years, on the same day as city elections. About the MVCSD Board of Education
The Mount Vernon Community School District Board of Education consists of seven (7) At Large Directors. The district will have three (3) open seats on the 2025 ballot, all four year terms expiring in 2029.
Board meetings are held monthly, typically at 6:30 PM on the 2nd Monday of each month in the High School Library. The Board also holds Work Sessions and Special Meetings, as needed. Meeting agendas and minutes can be found here.
Requirements to Run for School Board
- United States Citizen
- 18 years of age or older
- Resident of school district
- Eligible to register to vote
Each candidate is required to file an affidavit of candidacy and nomination petition. The petition must contain at least 50 signatures of district residents. Both the affidavit and petition forms must be filed together, or they will be rejected. Copies of the required paperwork can be found below, as well as the Secretary of State’s website. Physical copies may be picked up at the district office.

| Thursday, September 18, 2025 | Candidate filing deadline at 5:00 PM Central Time. All paperwork must be in hand by this time to be accepted. |
| Tuesday, September 23, 2025 | Last day for candidates to withdraw by filing a written request. Last day to file an objection on nomination papers. Deadline is 5:00 PM Central Time. |
| Tuesday, November 4, 2025 | School election date. Polls are open 7:00 AM – 8:00 PM. |
| Wednesday, November 12, 2025 | Tier 1 canvass of votes (Linn County). |
| Monday November 17, 2025 or Wednesday, November 19th, 2025 | Tier 2 canvass of votes (Johnson and Jones County). |
| December 2025 | Organizational meeting is held. New members are sworn in, and officer elections are held. |
